my exam needs a translation

  • Oct. 22nd, 2009 at 8:40 AM
[haruhi] not as planned
WOW. what.

Okay, so my last midterm went badly. It's in Translation Studies, which is basically learning all the technical stuff about meaning and translation. For the last question, worth 1/3 of the exam, we had to sort a bunch of words into lexical sets (basically, put them all with other words that have the closest meaning). Easy, right?

...Except 90% of the words given to us were British English words that generally aren't used in North America.

yaaay workplace douchery

[luke] SHUT UP THING
Oops didn't update all summer and most of fall. OH WELL lolol.

okay so. At work, I've been put in electronics for one shift a week, which is awesome because I actually know that shit, unlike the baby section where I'm always getting questions about breast pumps and diapers and strollers and... one day's training just doesn't cover that much, so I have to learn on my feet and it's kinda tough sometimes. (I do, however, like how 99% of customer questions can be answered by reading the box they are looking at to them.)

But yes, electronics is fun. And now with Christmas season approaching, we've started having two people in there at once instead of just the one. Except the guy working with me, while he's a lot of fun to chat with... is kinda douchey.

Whenever I'm answering a customer's question, he walks right into the conversation and takes over, explaining things that I was just in the middle of saying. I don't mind him jumping in if I'm fumbling for an answer or if I ask him to, but when I'm in the middle of explaining something I know just as well as he does? gtfo.

I don't know if he thinks I'm incapable or if he's just a show-off who can't keep his mouth shut, but if I end up working with him again, I'm probably going to have to confront him for being a dick. We've only had one shift together so far, but he's already worn down my patience quite a bit with this.

[luke] I'm the goddamn ambassador.
Whoa. For like the first time ever, my workload is actually decreasing as I near the end of the semester. I just finished the last of my group projects, and good riddance to those. For the last assignment, one of our group members didn't even bother showing up at all to help. Oh well. I don't believe in tattling on people who don't pull their own weight, but she can just enjoy trying to pass the final exam (which is based on these assignments) without doing most of the coursework.

So anyway, now that the big stuff's out of the way, I've been getting back to gaming and catching up on some anime. My progress:

Star Ocean 4: Halfway through my second playthrough. Still haven't killed myself. Found some lulzy scenes I missed on my first playthrough, though.
Final Fantasy 4: God why does Golbez suddenly have crazy elemental shields. DX Just beat him at the dwarves' castle and I'm about to head for the Sealed Cave.
Eternal Sonata: Got up to some guy kicking my ass for no reason. Should probably play some more sometime soon. :B

Tales of the Abyss anime: I was failing at keeping up with this, but I marathonned it last weekend and now I'm at episode 25! \o/
Kuroshitsuji anime: tell me again why we need a naked man-dog

Also I joined MyAnimeList just to see what a failure I am at finishing series. 76 dropped anime, fuck yes. I'm lazy and haven't customized my profile much, but if anyone has an account there and hasn't added me yet, go ahead! /o/

aaand I'm actually kind of done my [info]damned app! All I need to do now is agonize over some unimportant details for the last day or two before apps open.
[my immortal] NECPHILAK
Finished Star Ocean 4 yesterday.

It was fun, but god there were so many things that made me rage. why isn't anything ever about logic you can only have so many deus ex machinas in one game before it gets ridiculous jkdfgadhg

boy it sure is a good thing we're MAIN CHARACTERS because otherwise we might've been screwed like twenty times by now! ha ha ha

I hate this game so much

so I'm probably either going to do post-game or start a second playthrough tonight :B

getting so fat

[van/largo] >:3
fffff been back from visiting [info]albireo and [info]miishal for a few days but then had birthday partying and midterm hell, so didn't quite get the chance to sit down and write about reading week

THINGS OF NOTE!

-Delicious pies and cakes were had. Getting fat has never been so enjoyable as it is when living off [info]albireo's cooking.
-Got introduced to the wonders of Eternal Darkness! Watched [info]miishal play it from beginning to end and sort of want to start looking for a copy of my own, so I can share sanity effect funtimes with my roommates and other friends.
-got acquainted with chinchillas awwwwwwwwwwwwwww
-Learned that I am not allergic to pecans! I always thought I was, since I'm allergic to most other nuts. With this knowledge I shall go forth and eat all the delicious pecan-inclusive foods I've been avoiding my whole life!
-I'm still allergic to walnuts. :( Yes, I was testing these by eating the nuts in question don't judge me it worked. >O
-lol symphonia. After playing Dawn of the New World I kept thinking "now how come I never found regal that memorable in symphonia?" and now that I've seen bits of the game again... "oh, that's why." seriously regal why are you even here. :|
-Brought back a ton of bread, hell yes. ♥ My roommates have already devoured a third or so of it.
-Got a twitter! Because everyone else has one and I finally got peer pressured into doing it. Username is pazust - feel free to follow me and maybe I won't completely forget the site exists like I did with facebook although I didn't really join facebook myself--

Umm I think that's most of it. Eeee I love traveling, even when it's not to anywhere far away or especially different from home. It just always feels like an ~adventure~. ♥

And then I came home to friends and cake and money and a trip to the World Waterpark, fuck yes. ♥ also I am somehow clumsy enough to trip and scrape my knees while underwater. Yaaaay failing at everything. \o/

[estelle] :o?
So ever since getting a cell phone with a camera, I've been using it to take pictures of random weird shit whenever I see it. I just got around to uploading a bunch, so I think I will share!

Pool parties in the snow, glitching billboards, and hockey fans are fucking weird )

Give it to me baby.

[luke] I'm the goddamn ambassador.
So today I get out of bed and say to myself, "Okay, after being horribly inactive these past two weeks, I'm going to post at both of my RPs." And then I typed up one post and brainstormed for another, and...

My dad comes in like "Oh we just got invited to a dinner party and it's RIGHT NOW let's go."

fffff been to like four of those this week (but stuffing is so good I cannot complain about getting to eat it so many nights in a row *A*) Highlight of the week: Karaoke at my aunt's. Seeing my dad and my uncle sing Offspring in their growly monotone voices. Fuck yes.

so uh anyone who's been waiting on me for posts, or just wanting to talk to me ever, sorry :( every day I've been waking up late, heading out early, and then returning super late and tired and full of delicious rum.

Also, Christmas Day Haul: Persona 4, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea DS, Chrono Trigger DS, FF4 DS. Yes I am aware that I am spoiled fucking rotten. *A* this will perhaps last me all year.

anyway while I was out PARTYING HARD (no, not really. just regular type) it seems everyone was doing this meme:

WHAT MEMBER OF MY PARTY ARE YOU? MEME

do me do me /o/

merry not-yet-christmas to all :D

wooo got grades back. One A, two A-, one B. So... not bad. The B was in an art/lit history class and fuck those.

Anyway, even though Christmas isn't until tomorrow, I've already done gift exchanges with my mom and my friends, and... already have a pretty huge haul. Yes, I'm spoiled as fuck. :( So far this haul includes:

-22" LCD HDTV (fuck yes)
-sweet pajamas! \o/
-kitty cat piggy bank thing *A*
-Ouendan 2 o/
-vanilla spice body stuff *A*
-...bronzing lotion lol :(
-a screecher lmao
-Bender's Game DVD
-a fuckton of popcorn
-boots! \o/ because somehow I am an Albertan who doesn't own winter boots.

Being an only child is awesome. Tomorrow will be unlimited video game works. And... visiting crazy drunken relatives.
[anise] love is in the air
oh god oh god so today was my last exam, and I stressed majorly over it. When I went to review lecture notes and terms... WebCT was down. It never went back up. I was panicky and felt sick and struggled a lot in trying to study without anything to work with.

The exam itself was... really intimidating. Every question was worth at least 40 marks, so like... I hope I wrote enough for each answer? but at least my fear that I would run into something and be like "I don't even know what that is. At all." didn't come true. So... I'm sure I passed the exam, I don't know if I passed it well, but...

Just now I got my grade for the term paper for that class.

Grade: 100/100.

No fucking joke.

I... I can't even believe it, just kfdjdkgdfg I've never gotten 100% on a term paper. I didn't think it was possible to get 100% on a term paper. I e-mailed the prof back to let him know how happy it made me and to thank him, and he replied with:

"Keep in mind as well that I do not sugarcoat and am very difficult to please. I was quite happy with your paper, and you should be proud of your effort. And, remember also that my grades are absolute. The paper would have been an A at Harvard as well."

KILL ME NOW AND I MIGHT JUST DIE HAPPY

fffff

[luke] SHUT UP THING
oh god oh god today was just one narrowly avoided disaster after another

1. I woke up this morning to find out the power to the alarm clock had flickered overnight (the power in THAT OUTLET, and no other outlet in the house) so my alarm didn't go off. I had an exam today. This was scary. Fortunately, it turned out I managed to wake up only ten minutes later than intended. (when I normally wake up three hours later than that ahhhh)

2. Went to catch the bus in -30 (-22 F) weather, the driver is like "lolol the bus broke down a half hour ago and only JUST started working again" thank god I didn't try to leave then ahhhh my fingers would have turned into popsicles.

3. Started writing the exam. Me and pretty much everyone else in the class took 2/3 of the exam time on the first half of the exam. I was terrified that I wasn't going to finish. Fortunately, the prof got us an extension that was just barely long enough for me to finish. Half the class was still writing when I left though, so... idk I hope things worked out for them.

And those are just the major things today. I swear I must be both the unluckiest and luckiest person in Alberta right now.

ONE MORE EXAM aaaaa I don't have enough time to study this shit

RECOMMEND ME THINGS

SO CHRISTMAS IS COMING UP and I need to make a christmas list of over 9000 video games. spoiled pazu is spoiled

But I haven't been keeping up on video game news much lately, so I'm not 100% sure what's out there and good. SO RECOMMEND ME STUFF I SHOULD GET and like second other people's suggestions if you think they're good too. I have all consoles except the PSP so pretty much anything goes.

[luke] I'm the goddamn ambassador.
So... I'm in East Asian Studies 101. For the most part, this class has been about the cultures, religions and histories of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Every day we need to read a fuckload of text to prepare for class discussions. Normally these are boring as hell, but last night's readings? Last night's readings were gold.

Magical Girls and Atomic Bomb Sperm )

And... oh ho gonna be legal in Americaland in two hours. *A* Fuck yeah no more getting people to sneak me booze down there I mean I wouldn't do that, what

DOING SO WELL

  • Nov. 12th, 2008 at 4:50 PM
[luke] I'm the goddamn ambassador.
So I just got my Chinese midterm back today, and it kind of gave me a heart attack. Like... the problem isn't that I did badly. (I think.)

The problem is I don't understand my mark.

'you are good student' is NOT A GRADE )

Aaand in other news, christmas cards! I'm not doing them. :( But if anyone wants to send me one, just drop me a note here or on AIM and I'll give you my address or post it to your address post or whatever! \o/

I love getting cards but I haven't been posting in many card posts just because I feel like a jerk being like "SEND ME SHIT :|" when I'm not sending anything myself. :(

Somebody knows how to sell life insurance.

  • Oct. 25th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
[luke] I'm the goddamn ambassador.
I love how the guys I took out life insurance with keep sending me letters to remind me that I could die at any time, and should therefore give them lots of money.

I got a letter last month saying "hey we know you have a full life plan, but did you know you can get an extra $50,000 coverage for only $6.50 a month!?" so naturally I ignored it. Now I get another letter from them, saying "hey, just letting you know we're still extending this offer to you!"

And at the bottom, a little note.

"ps: Did you know that accidents are the leading cause of death for Albertans under the age of 45?"

Is... is that a threat?
[estelle] :o?
oooops how many months has it been since I last updated and how are people not defriending me for being so inactive

Sorry to anyone who only keeps contact with me through LJ, since I um. Dropped off the face of the earth. Again. Between the trip to Otakon, a trip to Mexico, moving to a new city, and now being in university, I keep forgetting I even have a main LJ. (Though I've been meaning to post about my new place like, forever.)

Speaking of which, having my own place is goddamn awesome. As much as I love my parents, it's really nice to get time away from them that isn't just a week-or-two vacation. (My mom doesn't seem to think so, though. She phones every week or so with "ARE YOU OKAY ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE ADJUSTING DO YOU NEED MY HELP" .__.) I'm sharing a townhouse with two friends from high school, and despite this being our first home away from our parents, it's... actually a really nice place. And we've been doing a decent job of keeping it nice!

o, and there are pics )

So yeaaah life is awesome \o/!! time to go back to farming grade in vesperia forever homework!

YAY DOING STUFF

[luke] I'm the goddamn ambassador.
old news is slightly old but I never post ever and when I think about it this is pretty post-worthy!

A Pazu is moving! Me and two friends have gotten a one-year lease on a verrry nice three-bedroom coach house in Edmonton. We move on the first of September.

I get a walk-in closet in my room. Walk. In. Closet. *A*

I'm kind of excited about a lot of things. Furnishing my own place, living with friends, not living with parents, taking uni courses I might actually give a damn about, getting to explore a big city, being near the biggest mall in the world, being in a city with an airport, sharing my roommates' PS3 and Xbox 360....

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ♥ ♥ ♥
